A quarter of the UK’s carbon emissions come from the energy used in homes with a similar amount coming from our businesses, industry and workplaces. On a national scale the UK economy needs to reduce CO2 emissions to comply with the carbon emissions budget legislated in the The Climate Change Act 2008.

The Green Deal is the proposed government initiative to increase energy efficiency in commercial and residential properties in the UK. First proposed to parliament in December 2010 the deal intends to create a new financing framework to enable the provision of fixed improvements to the energy efficiency of households and non-domestic properties. This will be funded by a charge on energy bills that avoids the need for consumers to pay upfront costs. It will allow private energy firms to make structural improvements to residential and commercial buildings such as loft and wall insulation and LED lighting to lower CO2 emissions energy bills.

Because the Green deal is not a personal loan the cost of these installations will be recovered through instalments on the energy bill over several years and there will be no obligation to continue paying the costs if you move house. A simple calculation, known as the “golden rule’’ of the green deal will be used to assess suitability for the scheme, those eligible will have been predicted that the energy efficiency improvements made to the property will equal or exceed the total cost of the installations.

Syntegra Consulting has successfully undertaken the Air Conditioning Inspection of Getty Images building in Camden town, London. Syntegra undertook the ACI inspection of the old Getty Images building which is an air conditioned office building in order to lease it to a new tenant. The ACI report together with the EPC were required as part of the legal documentation for the lease of the building.

The undertaking of an ACI (Air Conditioning Inspection) is a legal requirement according to article 9 of the Energy Performance Building Directive in England and Wales (EPBD). Air Conditioning Inspections are mandatory for all buildings with installed systems with rated cooling output greater than 12kW. The air conditioning inspection consisted of site inspections and the production of the Air Conditioning Inspection reports, which presents the site inspections findings and the recommendations for improving the system’s energy efficiency in order to save energy and reduce carbon emissions.

The Getty Images building inspected lies under the packaged cooling systems assessment since is air conditioned by a number of VRV and multi split and single split DX systems.

Syntegra consulting has managed to identify areas of improving the energy efficiency further of the building’s air conditioning system. Recommendations were made in upgrading AC equipment and control methodology. In addition, Syntegra investigated in improving the AC system’s efficiency and the building’s overall energy performance further, by recommending the use of LED lighting. LED lighting is the most energy efficient lighting technology compared to conventional technologies. Furthermore, LED lighting generates minimum heat, which helps reducing a building’s cooling load from lighting. Therefore, LEDs not only reduce the lighting electricity cost, but also the AC (air conditioning) cost of electricity due to reduced heat gains (cooling load). In addition, Syntegra managed to present solutions involving energy/heat recovery systems.

Moreover, Syntegra is following a holistic approach during the ACI site surveys. This means, that during the inspection other areas that will improve the building’s energy performance are examined. Such an area is the implementation of Low Zero Carbon technologies (LZC) aka Renewable Energy technologies. More specifically the possibility of implementing PV solar panels is examined. The utilization of PV (photovoltaic) panels can generate free energy from the sun and also provide an income to the building owner through the Feed-In-Tariff (FIT) scheme.

In addition, Syntegra managed to present solutions involving energy/heat recovery systems.

Syntegra Consulting has successfully undertaken the Air Conditioning Inspection of BP Castrol Technology centre in Pangbourne. The BP Castrol Technology Centre consists of sixteen buildings. The No16 buildings of the BP Technology Centre mainly comprise office, laboratory and storage areas. These are mainly single, two and three storey buildings.

The BP Castrol buildings lie under the packaged cooling systems assessment since they are air conditioned by a number of VRV systems and single DX split systems installed. Each of the VRV systems consisted of a VRV outdoor unit and indoor fan coil units. The VRV systems inspected provide heating and cooling. Some of the buildings are installed with VRV systems that incorporate heat recovery as well.

Syntegra consulting has managed to identify areas of improving the energy efficiency further of the building’s air conditioning system. Recommendations were made in upgrading AC equipment and control methodology. In addition, Syntegra investigated in improving the AC system’s efficiency further by recommending the use of LED lighting.

A US Department of Energy study has found more than 290 TWh in savings for lighting projects converted completely to LED lighting technology.

The US Department of Energy has published a report that details the amount of energy saved in 2010 through retrofit to LED-based light sources. The research covers 8 specific product types spread over two general categories: general illumination and outdoor lighting.

The report focuses on the following categories and specific product types:

General illumination

PAR, BR, and R shaped

MR16

600mm by 600mm fixtures

General service A-type

Outdoor lighting

Street lighting

Parking

Area and flood lighting

Residential lighting

The report states that LEDs in general illumination saved 0.38 TWh in 2010. It projects a potential savings of 133 TWh per year if all of the general illumination product types were converted to top performing LEDs.

In outdoor applications, conversion to LED sources saved 2.2 TWh in 2010. A complete replacement with LEDs in the outdoor category could save 131 TWh per year.

Where both of these lighting categories were retrofitted a 100% with LEDs, the DOE equates the savings to taking 21 million residential households off the grid. And based on the projections for improvements in LED technology for the year 2020, the projection escalates to the equivalent of removing 32 million households from the grid.

It is clear that the number of LED lighting installations increases every year. In conjunction, with the LEDs manufacturing processes, that will reduce the LEDs production cost, the time where the most of lighting applications will be replaced with LED technology, is not far.

To find out more about LED lighting technology and the huge cost savings generated by LEDs, please contact Syntegra Consulting for a FREE LED Feasibility Study.

Technical breakthroughs and manufacturing improvements should keep the LED industry on track to improve performance and reduce costs at an appropriate rate. However, the process of achieving this is not a 100% complete.

Development of a volume market for general LED lighting depends on technical breakthroughs and manufacturing improvements that reduce costs per lumen by 10 times less than the current cost. This will allow LEDs to compete with fluorescents at price. The recent progress suggests that the industry looks on track of achieving this. That will make the retrofit of fluorescents with LEDs a very cost effective solution.

Strong demand for display backlights propelled the HB-LED sector to better than 50% growth in 2010, and 2011 will likely see another 50% jump. Displays should continue to drive double-digit growth through 2013-2014. However, as the displays sector matures, continued growth will be dependent on the quick development of significant demand for general LED lighting by 2015. Manufacturers are currently developing the technology through extensive R&D to make the final breakthroughs and reduce the manufacturing cost of LEDs.

As we have mentioned in previous articles LEDs last longer than conventional lighting, and provide and provide the best energy and money savings when operated from 8 to 24 hours. Having said that, which type of lights stay on for 24 hours, 360 days per year? But of course, Exit Signs. Every building from residential block of flats, offices, retail stores to places of religious worship have Exit Signs. Exit signs are turned on all the time and are required by law. So far, Incandescent and fluorescent lamps have been used. However, the advancements on LED technology will change that. It is now possible to easily replace old Exit signs with LED Exit Signs which will reduce energy, operating cost and maintenance cost to minimal. The advanced efficiency and long lifetime (50,000hours or more) of LEDs make the replacement of old exit signs a necessity.

The facts speak for themselves. LED Exit Signs consume approximately 40kWh while conventional Exit Signs consume somewhere around 360 kWh. Also, LED Exit Signs have no maintenance cost since they have a lifetime of 15 years. And of course LED Exit Signs have an ROI period of 1.5 to 2 years.

Our FREE LED Surveys can demonstrate all the above benefits for any existing or new buildings. Furthermore, your company may be eligible for grant funding of upto 100%. To find our more contact us today.
