Green energy also referred to as renewable or sustainable energy are energy provisions that have no long term impact on the environment and are replenished by nature. They meet the energy requirements of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Unlike the use of fossil fuels which cannot be renewed and emit high levels of CO2 into the earth’s atmosphere, green energy generators such as hydroelectricity, solar energy in the form of PV and solar panels, tidal power, and biomass do not contribute to greenhouse gases and can therefore lower the carbon footprint.

Because of strict UK government legislation, going green in the workplace and new residential properties is now the only choice. However the growth of green energy is an opportunity not to be missed, by prioritising carbon reduction at the heart of the design of new buildings, operating costs can be significantly reduced.

Syntegra Consulting Ltd can provide Energy Performance Certification (EPC) and energy consultancy services to both commercial and residential properties in response to the European Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD). To find ways on improving your business or properties energy efficiency please visit us at www.syntegra-epc.co.uk

Syntegra Consulting has successfully undertaken the Air Conditioning Inspection of Getty Images building in Camden town, London. Syntegra undertook the ACI inspection of the old Getty Images building which is an air conditioned office building in order to lease it to a new tenant. The ACI report together with the EPC were required as part of the legal documentation for the lease of the building.

The undertaking of an ACI (Air Conditioning Inspection) is a legal requirement according to article 9 of the Energy Performance Building Directive in England and Wales (EPBD). Air Conditioning Inspections are mandatory for all buildings with installed systems with rated cooling output greater than 12kW. The air conditioning inspection consisted of site inspections and the production of the Air Conditioning Inspection reports, which presents the site inspections findings and the recommendations for improving the system’s energy efficiency in order to save energy and reduce carbon emissions.

The Getty Images building inspected lies under the packaged cooling systems assessment since is air conditioned by a number of VRV and multi split and single split DX systems.

Syntegra consulting has managed to identify areas of improving the energy efficiency further of the building’s air conditioning system. Recommendations were made in upgrading AC equipment and control methodology. In addition, Syntegra investigated in improving the AC system’s efficiency and the building’s overall energy performance further, by recommending the use of LED lighting. LED lighting is the most energy efficient lighting technology compared to conventional technologies. Furthermore, LED lighting generates minimum heat, which helps reducing a building’s cooling load from lighting. Therefore, LEDs not only reduce the lighting electricity cost, but also the AC (air conditioning) cost of electricity due to reduced heat gains (cooling load). In addition, Syntegra managed to present solutions involving energy/heat recovery systems.

Moreover, Syntegra is following a holistic approach during the ACI site surveys. This means, that during the inspection other areas that will improve the building’s energy performance are examined. Such an area is the implementation of Low Zero Carbon technologies (LZC) aka Renewable Energy technologies. More specifically the possibility of implementing PV solar panels is examined. The utilization of PV (photovoltaic) panels can generate free energy from the sun and also provide an income to the building owner through the Feed-In-Tariff (FIT) scheme.

For more information on Air Conditioning Inspections, FREE LED Lighting Feasibility Studies, PV/FIT design & installation please contact Syntegra Consulting on T: 08450 091625 and Email: mail@syntegra-epc.co.uk

Renewable energy is a massive opportunity for all businesses right now. Why? Well for one, it can help organisations to cut energy costs at a time when cost cutting is most definitely high on the agenda. But equally importantly, it offers a chance for companies to demonstrate their commitment to the environment – the kind of commitment which, increasingly, stakeholders everywhere are looking to see.

Renewable experts in the Thames Valley area say “The range of renewable energy technologies is growing and, more importantly, becoming more financially viable for businesses to adopt as the cost of generation renewable power falls and the price of grid electricity continues to rise.

“Here in the Thames Valley we get a fair amount of sunshine, which makes solar PV an interesting option for businesses with access to un-shaded roof space. Although there will be fewer industrial-scale installations now that the Government has slashed the financial incentives (feed in tariffs) for such projects, smaller installations can still yield a guaranteed 8-10 per cent return over 25 years.

“Heat pumps extract thermal energy from the ground or the air, compress it and use it to heat buildings and water – much like a refrigerator in reverse. A good heat pump will output something like four times as much heat energy as it takes in as electricity. DECC has launched the renewable heat incentive to encourage the uptake of this kind of technology.

Building energy is, of course, a huge issue. Energy audits have become MOTs for buildings according to Alan King, of energy consultancy firm Syntegra Consulting. He says “Not everyone knows this, but buildings produce nearly half of the UK’s carbon emissions-almost twice that of cars and planes. The EU knows about high carbon emissions from buildings, hence the European Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) in 2002”

“The UK too is ramping up its energy efficiency targets and legislation for buildings. Since 2009, it has been compulsory for all properties rented or sold to have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC)

“This new EPC market in the UK currently estimated to be worth £500m a year, and is set to increase. And the energy assessment market will continue to grow with it. In 2009, we carried out more than 1,500 energy assessments for our property homeowner clients alone. In total, we made recommendations for savings of more than £161,000 a year on energy bills, and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by more than 1,062 tonnes a year.

The UK Green Building Council of which Syntegra is a member has started discussions about further legislation to encourage reduced carbon emissions from small businesses, and for all commercial buildings. It won’t be long before all buildings will have to display energy certificates that specifically show their running costs in terms of energy efficiency and in the form of a Display Energy Certificate (DEC)”.
