Earth Day – the next big celebration

As we all sit down this weekend to gorge on chocolate and catch up with friends and family, many of us will give barely a passing thought to the religious significance of Easter.

We could discuss the reasons for that at length.

But as we do sit around our food-laden tables, there is another universal issue of significance that we should perhaps dwell on – and then finally act on.

Just a few days after Easter there is what should be another memorable date in the calendar – April 22nd has been declared Earth Day.

A national ‘teach-in’ on environmental issues in the US in 1970 mobilised 20 million Americans onto the streets to demonstrate for a healthy sustainable environment in an era when ‘environment was a word that appeared more often in spelling bees than on the evening news’.

Now, approaching its 50th anniversary, a global movement has mushroomed out of the simple idea and rallies and events are expected around the world to mark the date.

The theme this year is Environmental and Climate Literacy and organisers say: ‘Before we can solve the dire environmental threats facing us in the 21st century, we must build a global citizenry knowledgeable in environmental science and fluent in local and global ecological issues.

‘Environmental and climate literacy is the engine not only for creating green voters and advancing environmental and climate laws and policies but also for accelerating green technologies and jobs.

‘This Earth Day, we are launching an ambitious goal of achieving global climate and environmental literacy by Earth Day 2020.

‘Scientific fact is under threat. Lawmakers and business leaders are turning a blind eye to the impending environmental crisis caused by human actions. Environmental justice demands an educated citizenry capable of defending science and reason.

‘Environmental education is the first step towards progress. The future of technology, the jobs of tomorrow, and the policies and laws that nurture sustainability require all humans to be fluent in local environmental issues and prepared to tackle the unprecedented challenge of climate change.

This goal is not only an enormous undertaking, it is critical and timely. The signing of the Paris Agreement is one step towards mitigating the impacts of climate change. Education needs to be a key part of this effort.’

All laudable sentiments, values under which we operate every day as we go about our business helping other businesses play their part in halting the devastating effects of climate change.

We’re proud that every building we assess for sustainability compliance  has the chance to leave a reduced carbon footprint, that every mechanical and electrical design consultancy report we deliver makes a business owner and architect consider the environment and that every element of wasted energy we identify for a client is a saving for the planet.

That’s the essence of our Earth Day ‘teach-in’ and we’re happy to share the message with existing and potential clients to make sure it spreads further.

So this weekend, as you sit among the discarded Easter egg wrappings and finish your religious discussions about our past and how we came to be on this earth, why not move the debate on to how you can do something to protect this earth and its future.

Then, on the 22nd, be part of a movement across this great planet of ours and play your part in Earth Day. If we all did that, the world would be a better place.
